Get ready for Paddlefest, poker run fund-raiser

Paddle Fest 2018 is coming.

The educational and recreational program will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at Beg Bend Outflow Recreation Area, just downstream from Kinzua Dam.

Event hosts are the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Allegheny Outfitters, Youngsville Recreation Commission, and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.

“Anyone can attend, so invite your family and friends to enjoy Allegheny’s beautiful waters,” a release from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Kinzua Dam said. “Different forms of paddle craft will be available for ‘tryouts,’ or transport your own and join in the YRC Poker Run fund-raiser.”

Life jackets must be worn. Loaners will be available for those trying out paddle craft. Those involved in the poker run must bring their own.

“Make sure to wear a swim suit or clothes you can get wet, and don’t forget drinking water, snacks, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, and water shoes,” the release said.

“In addition to paddle craft tryouts and the poker run, activities will include audio-visual programs emphasizing the importance of paddling safety, such as wearing life jackets, dressing appropriately for conditions, monitoring flows and hazards, matching location to skill level, essential gear, and trip planning,” according to the release.

Both Big Bend and the Kinzua Dam Visitor Center will be staffed and open for educational and recreational programming. “Promotional items will be available for all participants.”

The event is free to the public. More information is available by contacting Steve Lauser of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at (814) 726-0661.
