AARP fall 2018 Smart Driver Courses
The Allegheny Community Center (ACC) will be hosting two AARP Smart Driver Courses this fall at 42 Clark Street, Warren.
All the classes will be from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The first four-hour refresher class will be given for Pennsylvania drivers who have taken the course before, less than three years, three months ago. The refresher course at the ACC will be Wednesday, Sept. 5, taught by Larry Jackson.
An eight-hour course will be taught by Jackson in two 4-hour sessions on Wednesdays, Oct. 10 and 17. This course is for those Pennsylvania drivers who have not taken the course before or took it over three years, three months ago.
These courses are intended to increase your personal safety by covering the basics of defensive driving. Just as important, the course is designed to make you aware of how changes in vision, hearing and physical reflexes due to aging can impact your driving. New vehicle and roadway features and new laws of the road will also be discussed. For example, we will discuss: AARP is encouraging new tires when the tread is 4/32-inch or less instead of the State inspection requirement for 2/32-inch, so you have more traction to stop on wet pavement.
If you are over 55-years old you may be eligible for an automobile insurance premium reduction or discount of five percent for three years (ask your insurance agent – all drivers in the household may have to take the course), and there are no tests (written or driving). Each class is $20 per person ($15 for AARP members) — paid by check to AARP or cash to the instructor on the first day of class. You do not have to be a member of AARP to take the course. There is an additional charge of $2 per person/course to help defray the ACC’s operating costs – bring cash for the ACC. Advanced registration is recommended as the class is limited to 20 attendees. For courses at the ACC, call 723-3237 for registration.
Another four-hour refresher course is scheduled for the Sheffield Senior Center on Thursday, Nov. 15, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Jackson will teach this course. The Sheffield class is $20 per person ($15 for AARP members) — paid by check to AARP or cash to the instructor the night of the class. You do not have to be a member of AARP to take the course. There is no additional facility charge. To register for the class, call 968-5667.
