Region ‘Standing Tall With Cody’

Cody Crandall has been a patient at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y., since mid-November, awaiting a heart transplant.

Crandall, a 2013 Jamestown Community College graduate and The Post-Journal sportswriter who suffered viral heart failure last August, is not allowing his medical situation to deter him from promoting organ donor awareness and improving organ donor participation in New York state.

To assist Crandall, JCC’s athletic department and The Post-Journal have jumped on board to help raise awareness by coordinating a Standing Tall for Cody donor registration drive during JCC Jayhawks basketball games in February.

The home game schedule includes women’s/men’s doubleheaders at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Feb. 14 and Feb. 21 in addition to 1 and 3 p.m. on Feb. 24. JCC’s Physical Education Complex will also host Section VI high school boys and girls basketball playoffs during the week of Feb. 26.

Organizers estimate at least 10,000 people will be in JCC’s gym at some point during the tournament.

Online access for organ donation registration will be provided at a designated table during each college and sectional game. Standing Tall For Cody wristbands will be available, and a raffle for a 50-inch flat-screen TV, courtesy of Acme Appliance in Jamestown, will be held. JCC’s basketball teams will wear Standing Tall for Cody T-shirts during warmups.

“Being (in the hospital) has made me realize how many people are in need of life-saving transplant surgeries,” Crandall told The Post-Journal. “Also, through my own research and through the staff here at Strong, I have realized that New York has long had poor participation in organ donation, ranking last among the 50 states. I don’t think a lot of people realize how serious of an issue it is. I know I certainly didn’t before I became sick.”
