Then think again
Human Services showing film at Praise Fellowship in recognition of Recovery Month
Do you think addicts and alcoholics could be congressmen, bestselling authors, and NBA athletes?
If not, then think again.
In recognition of Recovery Month, Forest-Warren Human Services and Praise Fellowship are partnering to offer a free showing of the film The Anonymous People at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27.
The screening will be held at Praise Fellowship, 7451 Market Street, Russell.
The feature-length documentary features NBA star Chris Herren, award-winning actress Kristen Johnston, Miss USA 2006 Tara Conner, author William Cope Moyers, and former congressmen Patrick Kennedy and Jim Ramstad speaking candidly about their recovery from addiction.
“Their brave testimonies dispel long-standing cliches about addiction and recovery,” according to the press release.
The film explores the deeply entrenched social stigma and discrimination that keeps the voices of those in recovery silent and their faces hidden for decades. The silence, the release states, has been filled by sensational depictions of addiction “that continue to perpetuate a fascination with the dysfunctional side of what is a preventable and treatable health condition.” The film showcases leaders, volunteers, corporate executives, and celebrities who are leading a movement to make recovery stories legitimate and public.
“The addiction recovery advocacy movement questions the approach the U.S. has taken in regards to addiction: criminalizing a health condition, marginalizing those impacted, and giving superficial treatment to the chronic illness of addiction. The failure has resulted in an annual price tag of $350 billion, lost lives, and disrupted families and communities,” according to the film’s press release.
The goal of The Anonymous People is to fuel “a changing conversation and community activism that aims to transform public opinion, and finally shift problematic policy toward lasting recovery solutions.”
The screening of the film is free and open to the public and will include a celebration of “the long term recovery of many persons from addiction,” says the release.
