Warren Lions Club celebrates tradition of community service, fellowship

The Warren Lions Club met at the end of June to kick off its 95th year of community service, fellowship, and club activities.

Lions Club members convened at Betts Park for their annual installation dinner, welcoming new Club President Norm Ewing and inducting the remaining club officers, including Randy Voty (Vice President), Jim Embrey (Treasurer) and Lisa Rivett (Secretary).

In addition to kicking off the new Lions year, the Club wrapped up a busy spring after maintaining a steady slate of activities including assistance with eye screenings at Warren Area Elementary Center, litter cleanup along Conewango Avenue, and Monarch Butterfly milkweed distribution in conjunction with the Jamestown PA Lions Club and the Audubon Community Nature Center. The Club also hosted the Lions District Convention this past April, accommodating Lions Clubs from seven northwest Pennsylvania counties.

The Lions Club rolled out the weenie wagon for several outings over the past few months, this year adding some First Friday appearances to the normal schedule. Community support of these efforts enables the yearly contributions that are distributed by the Warren Lions Club every spring. Recipients of the 2017 year donations included many traditional regional Lions sight and hearing programs, as well as local organizations A Safe Place, Family Services of Warren County, CASA, Second Harvest Food Bank, ACC, and Boy Scouts Troop 6, among others.

This year, the Lions have also continued the Club tradition of providing informative programs at their monthly lunch and dinner meetings. Recent presentations were given by Kevin Reagle of the Warren 9-1-1 Center, Warren Police Chief Ray Zydonik, and most recently, Douglas Hearn of the Crary Art Gallery, who presented a program outlining the Gallery’s 40th Anniversary activities. New Lion Sherry Tune, Supervisor of the Allegheny National Forest, also provided a talk on that Agency’s operations. These programs allow Club members to better understand other community organizations and programs, and aid in identifying potential future community service projects.

During the 2016-2017 year, the Club added to its membership with the induction of Troy Wagner, David Powell, Sherry Tune, Ben Reinke and Mark Hecht. However, the Club also experienced some member departures during this time, including Barb Hallock, Terry Hallock, Jim Kemp, and Charles Mackenzie, all very active club members whose presence will be sorely missed.

The Lions Club is currently planning a fall open house event to inform potential new members. If you would like to attend this event, are interested in presenting a program at one of the Lions meetings, or would like to learn more about the Lions Club, contact the Warren Lions at (814) 726-1381.
