Halls of Ivy

The Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation (PPFF) recently recognized the outstanding stewardship of Pennsylvania’s state park and state forest systems by Katie Gustafson by awarding her the Young Volunteer Award. This year’s award sponsor is AT&T.

Katie, a Park and Resource Management major at Slippery Rock University, and 2014 graduate of Youngsville High School, spent the summer of 2016 rerouting two sections of the Adam’s Run trail in Chapman State Park. The reroute was scouted, GPSed and mapped by Ms. Gustafson. Additionally she developed the new trail segments, applied several tons of gravel, and removed old segments, all by hand.

Katie was honored at PPFF’s 11th annual awards banquet on May 10 at the West Shore Country Club in Camp Hill.

Founded in 1999, the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation supports 121 state parks and 2.2 million acres of forest by coordinating volunteers, activities and donations through its 40 chapters. The mission of the foundation is to inspire stewardship of Pennsylvania’s state parks and forests through public engagement in volunteerism, recreation, and conservation.

Be sure to include full name, age, and parent’s name and contact number on the back side. Pattern art will be put on display in the library.

Pattern should be original, not copied from book or Internet. Hint: Google “how to doodle a simple pattern” to help you come up with ideas.

Build a Better World Summer Reading

Each summer, the Warren Public Library’s summer reading program consists of two components: a reading component (children keep track of titles read and receive prizes) and a program component, which consists of a variety of weekly and special programs for children to attend at the library.

This year registration for the reading component started Thursday, June 1.

Any format counts: books, magazines, eBooks, audiobooks, comic books, etc.

First 200 children to register will receive a Taco Bell coupon for a free regular seasoned beef taco & bean burrito.

Children can turn in reading logs between July 17 and August 12 to receive prizes. Their names will also be published in the Times Observer.

As in the past, children will be encouraged to read for pleasure, which means they get to choose books they want to read over the summer. Younger children can participate as parents can keep track of titles read to their little ones.

A variety of programs for children and their families start the week of June 19 and run through Saturday, August 5, 2017.

Build a Book contest

Build a Book: Well, actually, build a book cover.

Youth ages five to sixteen (5-16) are invited to create a book cover along with a short book description. Think of your favorite topic and create a book cover that includes: title, author, illustrator and an illustration. You may work with a friend if you want (or do it all yourself), so the author may be one person and the illustrator another person. On the back side write a short description of what the book is about (well, what it would be about if you were actually writing an entire book). This description is meant to be exciting in order to entice readers to read your book. Please use paper 8-1/2×11; it can be regular or construction paper. Also include your name, age, parent’s name and contact number on the bottom of the back side. (If two children collaborate, please choose just one name for the information on the back side.)

Build a Book is due to the Warren Public Library’s Children’s Department by June 30.

Submissions will be put on display in the library.

This contest will be judged by August 1: first place prize is a $50 Amazon gift card and second place prize is a $30 Amazon gift card.

Winners will be notified August 1 and submissions may be retrieved after August 1.
