Woman’s Club meets

Photo submitted to Times Observer Josie Gerardi, Street Landscape committee member, is shown with Warren Woman’s Club president Karen Davis during the recent presentation: Urban Forest of Warren: Past, Present and Future.

Urban Forest of Warren: Past, Present and Future was the topic of Josie Gerardi’s presentation to the Warren Woman’s Club on Monday, Feb. 20.

Gerardi, a retired Warren County teacher, Penn State Master Gardener, member of Warren Garden Club and member of the City of Warren Street Landscape Committee, began by telling of Jim Reier, Department of Public Works (DPW) head, in the years when Warren City had its own tree nursery.

The city experienced natural tree loss of the common species of maples and oaks due to age, disease and weather occurrences.

Presently, Mike Holtz, current DPW head, and Dave Hildebrand, city planner/grantwriter, oversee at least 60 bare-root tree plantings in the spring and autumn each year with the help of city arborist, Tom Frair, and Bentley Tree Company. Volunteers assist with these tree plantings.

Frair does an annual tree evaluation and makes an end of the year report to city council.

Warren has been a Tree City for 27 years garnering funds to plant and maintain our trees. Patio furniture along the business district near Pennsylvania Avenue attracts many to eat and gather downtown and admire the trees and flower plantings.

A weekly Tree Tender program is in process at the city building attended by Gerardi and member Mary Conarro. This is an in-depth course to educate volunteers who will assist with tree management in the future.

In the coming months the Liberty Street improvements will include the gazebo completion with adjacent plantings and furniture. The pathway along the 400 block of Pennsylvania Avenue west will have a bird watching platform constructed on the north bank of the Allegheny River.

An Arbor Day celebration takes place each year and this year’s event is April 29.

Davis thanked hostesses Dottie Higgins and Donna Sadler, who was unable to attend, for planning the menu and decorating the table in a Presidents’ Day theme with miniature statues of American presidents along with red carnations and candles.

Useable Discard fundraising sale will take place Friday, April 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday, April 8, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the club ballroom. The May 15 Fashion Show will feature clothing and accessories from GG My Love. Bridge continues each Thursday and a refresher course by Connie Michell starts Wednesday, February 22, at 10 a.m. at the club. The ESHPG merit scholarship applications are available on line and due in mid-March.

The next self-catered luncheon is Monday, March 6, with Jean Gomory giving a presentation on the Warren County Conservation District. Roberta Ward, Rebecca Ryan and Virginia Letko will hostess. Reservations are due Friday, March 3, by noon.

A new Woman’s Club year begins in April. New members are always welcome to visit the club and join. Details may be found by visiting the Warren Woman’s Club website or calling the club manager, Anne Higgins, at 723-5910.
