Philomel’s “The More the Merrier” program was held February 8th at the Woman’s Club.

President Ann Ferguson began the afternoon by greeting members and introducing guests. Chairperson, Joseph Dolan, explained that the musical program would be performed in five events.

Performers for Event One were Vera Finger and Joseph Dolan who played two four-hand marches. The first was entitled “Children’s March” and then a more lively, “March #1”, both by Schubert.

Event Two continued with Mary Beth Whiting, vocalist, accompanied by pianist Jack Hemink. Mary Beth sang “Stormy Weather,” by John C. Sacco, and “Brother Will, Brother John,” by Arland and Koehler.

Event Three featured Kathy Neal and Cathy Peterson playing four-hand pieces on the club’s Steinway piano. Their first piece was Mozart’s unpublished “Sonata in D Major,” followed by, “This Little Heart of Mine, I’m Gonna Let It Shine.”

For Event Four, Becky Darbee performed Van Eyck’s “Variations of der Fluyten Lust-Hof,” written for the recorder, arranged for the piccolo.

The last event was a six-hand (played on one piano) piece: “A French Dance in Four Parts,” by Carl Czerny. The three pianists were Cathy Peterson, Joseph Dolan, and Vera Finger.

Following the musical entertainment, hostesses Karen Davis and Barb Graziano served a lovely and delicious Valentine-themed tea in the dining room

The next program will be held at the Woman’s Club on Sunday, March 12, at 2 p.m..

The program will feature performances by members of Little Bach and Junior Philomel. Hostesses will be Gail Cowan and Dottie Higgins. New members, both performing and non-performing, are always welcome.
